When it comes to books you own, how willing are you to
>Crack the spine
>Fold the corner of the page
>Use a highlighter
>Write notes in the margins

I nearly always crack the spines of my books and despise corner-folding. I don't mind notes if it's a pre-owned copy but I don't like writing my own.

Anonymous 19761

>Crack the spine
I try to avoid it but if it happens, it happens.
>Fold the corner of the page
Very rarely. I only do it if I can't find anything to use as a bookmark.
>Use a highlighter
Never.
>Write notes in the margins
Never. That's what notebooks are for.

Anonymous 19762

sometimes i tear out pages to wipe my ass

Anonymous 19763

>crack the spine
I do this but I try not to

>fold the corner of a page

I admit this is how I keep my page. I know that I'm a criminal for this

>use a highlighter

Never. I never do this. At most I will leave a dot beside a paragraph

>write notes in the margins

The most I will do is write a note at the very end of the book stating my name, the date I finished the book, and a short sentence about how I feel having finished the book. For example, I recently read Watership Down and on the last page I wrote:

"14 June 2021, (my name), "I'm sad to have finished yet another story I will never forget"

I tore a page out of Dorian Gray to roll a joint with

>Crack the spine
I don't go out of my way to crack the spine but if it happens then it happens. No use crying over spilled milk.
>Fold the corner of the page
I do this all the time lol.
>Use a highlighter
No.
>Write notes in the margins
God no. It feels almost sacrilegious to do so.

OP pic looks like the books I get really into or the books I was forced to read for school.
It gives your copy of your book character imo

>Crack the spine
If a book is worth physically owning, it's worth getting it hardcover, and if you're cracking the spine of hardcover books you're a psychopath.
>Fold the corner of the page
Never.
>Use a highlighter
Never.
>Write notes in the margins
Never.

Anonymous 19774

If I were rich, I'd but three copies of each book, one for preservation, other to write and mark, and other to spare.

Anonymous 19775

I am autistically cautious with my books and won't harm them in any way. I didn't know about how you're supposed to stretch the spine of a hardcover book when you first get it though, so I do have some with fucked up spines.

Anonymous 19776

>>19759
>Crack the spine
Only books worth owning are hardcover, so no cracked spines.
>Fold the corner of the page
Never.
>Use a highlighter
Never.
>Write notes in the margins
Never.

Anonymous 19778

>Crack the spine
Only if necessary

>Fold the corner of the page

Unlikely, I'll use a bookmark or post it notes.
>Use a highlighter
Never in a novel, but if it's a text book I own I highlight liberally.
>Write notes in the margins
Same as above, only in text books which I reference a lot at work.

If a book doesn't have a bookmark ribbon attached, i fold page corners. I don't take notes in books only because i can't be bothered, but i should start doing that. Sometimes i come across an old "virgin" book with its pages still uncut, one is supposed to use a paper knife to separate them, but i just rip them apart. I used to rip out foreword too if it wasn't written by the author.

Although I did all of these things to academic textbooks because it was necessary. I actually found other people's notes and highlights in the library useful.

>Crack the spine
no
>Fold the corner of the page
NO
>Use a highlighter
No unless it's an academic textbook
>Write notes in the margins
An odd note in pencil doesn't sound as pain-inducing as the others but I have still never done it (save for textbooks).

Good people card.j…

I only buy paperbacks and after reading them you can tell. I crack the spine, I fold the corner of the page, I highlight cool quotes, I write down notes. I do it all. It's my book, that's why I buy books and not rent them at the library.

And I should say that highlighting has seriously improved my reading experience. It's like taking snapshots on a hike, keeps you remembering the important parts. Wouldn't want to be without it and couldn't read long books (1000+ pages) w/o it.

Anonymous 19807

I've got a handful of favourite books that I romanticise writing my own notes in but I can't bring myself to write on the pages. I've bought two copies of some books so I could worship the original and destroy the other but I can't do it.

I wasn't aware of spine-cracking until now. It's funny, I can suddenly look at my bookshelf and divide books by the year I got them:
>cracked spine = 2005-2010
>laminated = 2010-2015
>bare and pristine = 2015-2020
Then there's a small group of books that are laminated AND have several cracks on the spine, those are so well-loved they're very unappealing in comparison to the books I didn't care for.

Anonymous 19824

>Crack the spine
Always, I don't know if it's a regional thing but some hardcover books are unreadable brand new. I remember buying a few and not being able to open them more than a few cm without resistance. Softcovers are also annoying if they print too close to the spine and it's new, can't read shit.
>Fold the corner of the page
Only if I don't have anything else on hand to use as a bookmark, it doesn't work very well for me so I just use a pen or some other object until I can find something better.
>Use a highlighter
No
>Write notes in the margins
No, I keep separate notes in the cover fold
