Feels weird not just saying you were playing dress-up as a kid. How old are you? If you have been cosplaying for 20 years and you haven’t made any friends doing it, it’s probably not for you. I’m really not trying to be mean, but maybe just need to cosplay better… cosplaying is about how good the costume and you look, if you are using it as a social thing.

Try going to local (or at least near) conventions and start talking to people.
Get their socials and start talking to them over whatever social medias you use.

Wow, opposite problem here.
I've never had the courage to cosplay but I've been friends with lots of cosplayers over the years.
I'm still trying to work my way up to wearing anything other than some cheap akatsuki coat…
What's been stopping you from making cosplay friends? Did you just cosplay in your home? Only went to huge conventions without small group conversations? Never took part in speed-dating and ticked the "friend" option? I think it's harder to make friends at really huge conventions, but if you stay longer and strike up conversations with the right people, perhaps find out as you're headed home that some other cosplayers seem to be headed in the same direction… There are a lot of opportunities when you look out for them, maybe you can make specific plans for this kind of thing at your next convention?
