I think it's a bit more complicated than just deep insecurity or male approval.
Modern society demands humans to go through a LOT of developmental milestones. Miss one too many of them due to stressful or unsafe environment, and you will become weird or unfit. It makes you develop insecurities and needs normal people don't.
