I have several types of real leather jackets and all of them are older than I am. They still are in mint condition. I have one faux leather jacket that is less than 5 years old and is starting to peel. Do the math which is worse for the environment (not to mention your wallet).
Personally I like certain styles of leather jackets on men; some biker jackets are too try hard on men. But I love love love a leather aviator or bomber jacket on a man. Yum.

It's a bit of an egg/chicken problem: the industrial revolution created much more products and revenue than necessary. Suddenly, people didn't need to be so reliant on each other (just keep in mind: up until the 1960s in Europe, poor rural family all slept on one bed, spent their days working together just to survive etc.).
What I'm saying is that people didn't have that much the opportunity to be one individual, they were too much reliant, dependent on each other for that.
The excess of production was somewhat shared, and services developed, and suddenly we have leisure time that opens up a whole new opportunity for production/consumption.
The capitalist spirit (e.g. how to grow the most capital) trends towards consumerism as consumerism relies on one sole homo economicus; hence the push towards individualism. But it works both ways : if I realize I can choose my clothes color, I project some meaning into it, and this red cloth I picked helps me project what I am, and distinguishes me from others. So in order to grow capital, it makes sense to offer more choices, which offers more distinction, which offers etc.

Love Western men's fashion in the mid to late 1800s. I love the long coats and the heeled shoes. There's something dramatic about it that is very attractive to me, but not as crazy as what they wore in the 1700s. I like that it was considered manly to put some effort into your appearance back then. I'd obviously find it goofy if I saw a guy in 2023 dressing like this because it'd just look like he was wearing a costume, but I love period dramas because actors can create that suspension of disbelief that you're not just seeing some dorky guy in a costume.
