Share your favorite Ghibli films, scenes, characters…Anything.

>What are your top 3 favorite films?

>Who is your favorite character?
>What is your favorite song/soundtrack from a Ghibli film?
>Which movie was your first? How old were you?
>Which film are you watching next?

As for me, I had somehow never watched a single Ghibli movie until this week. I started with Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service, and the latter has probably become my favorite film ever. I'm looking towards Howl’s Moving Castle or Porco Rosso next.

I also started watching ghibli movies very recently. They're very comfy! Obviously I haven't seen them all.

>What are your top 3 favorite films?

In order: Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Momonoke, Castle in the Sky (although I'm sure it'll change once I watch the other ones)
>Who is your favorite character?
Very predictably, Howl. Although I also really liked Dola from a Castle in the Sky, she's an extremely cool and charming character.
>What is your favorite song/soundtrack from a Ghibli film?
I really like the Totoro soundtrack, makes me dreamy.
>Which movie was your first? How old were you?
My Neighbor Totoro. I was 19 when I watched it.
>Which film are you watching next?
I plan on watching Spirited Away.

>What are your top 3 favorite
films?
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Can't say I have a third, as I watch them more I begin to notice slight structural issues.
>Who is your favorite character?
It's a tie between the husband of the baker in Kiki and the Head Priest from Mononoke.
>What is your favorite song/soundtrack from a Ghibli film?
Princess Mononoke's
>Which movie was your first? How old were you?
Spirited Away at age 13ish.
>Which film are you watching next?
I've seen all the Miyazaki films, but I do want to see "How do you live?" if Miyazaki doesn't croak first.
I've heard Earwig and the Witch is really fucking bad, and given that Tales of the Earthsea was a festering shitpile, I'm excited to see Goro fail to live up to his father once again.
When I saw commercials for "When Marnie was There", I thought it was a fanfilm. So actually watching that also has me morbidly curious because it looks fucking awful too.

1. Whisper of the Heart
2. My Neighbor Totoro
3. Grave of the Fireflies
Also I didn't expect it but I cried so hard at When Marnie Was There. I rarely cry at films. To me that movie is a masterpiece.

Bumping this thread to say I finally watched Howl's Moving Castle and I was really disappointed…The plot is so convoluted and aimless. The art is very pretty though.

A lot of Studio Ghibli movies rely on the art rather than the plot

Thank you for noticing, you could remove everything outside of Howl's titular Moving Castle and nothing would be lost.

>>19765
Yeah, what a stupid thing for a visual medium to rely more on it's images than it's story… wait a second.

For me Howl's Moving Castle is one of the better written high fantasy Ghiblis. I think it is my favorite out of Spirited Away, Mononoke, Laputa, that group. It makes me want to read the original books.

First off, Spirited away isn't High Fantasy.

I had this feeling too after experiencing how bad Howl's Moving Castle was, and found it to be even worse. Sophie comes off as even more dislikable in the book, Howl is less of a drama queen and more of a brat with how he acts, and the narrative falls apart in the last chapter. Given that you liked the film, maybe you'll like the book too, I just can't recommend it at all really.

>What are your top 3 favorite films?

Haven't watched many, but:
When Marnie Was There, Spirited Away, and then Kiki

>Who is your favorite character?

Mei Kusaka from Totoro bc she reminds me of my sister when she was tiny and I wanted to protect her when she got lost lol

>What is your favorite song/soundtrack from a Ghibli film?

The songs from Howl's Moving Castle, don't know the name but it's staccato and upbeat, kind of baroque sounding?

>Which movie was your first? How old were you?

Spirited Away when I was 10, cried with fear when it got dark at the theme park and her parents were turned

>Which film are you watching next?

Howl's Moving Castle, I watched it but don't remember so I'm going again

Me too, I have never cried that much at anything like what the hell is even that?! I don't know if it's the themes about learning to accept love, forgiving, growing up, and the special and sacred bond between Marnie and Anna, but I have never been so affected by a film before

Finished "When Marnie was There", solid 6/10. The animators had no idea how lighting works and there were many shots were characters should be casting shadows on the ground and each other, but no such thing occurs, making everything feels disconnected from the background. If I ignore that, the entire film should have ended before we get the narrative dump about Marnie, or the narrative should have been given in bits and pieces throughout the film. Some flashbacks where Marnie as an old women shows up might have helped to actually integrate it into the story. Writers also didn't know when to fucking shut up. This is most evident in the ending credits where the film would have been perfectly fine with no one talking and just the visuals. Literally nothing was gained by having the characters talk, just distracting from the closure. The animation was good in some bits, but in the end, a very mediocre film, which is something I shouldn't have to say about a studio like Ghibli.
