NES Nerds Anonymous 24466

Any NES fans in the audience tonight? Mega Man got into music and gaming simultaneously as a kid and i'll forever be grateful

Anonymous 24467

I'm not a huge fan of NES games in general as the library is full of jank, but Mega Man is pretty cool. Castlevania 1 and 3 are still some of the best games ever made.

Yeah you definitely have to do some digging to find good ones but I am forever in love with that graphical style and 8-bit music in general. Castlevania 3 is def up there for me. I recommend Gargoyles Quest 2 if you have never played it, it is a great action platformer with awesome music

I don't think I've tried that one so I'll check it out. One thing I miss is the overall difficulty of the era. It feels like games got progressively easier as time passed.

Yeah I agree, I also appreciate that playing older games taught me to just figure out what to do cause there was no way in hell I was reading a manual as a kid. The fact that I can turn on my NES or SNES and be actually playing the game in under a minute is a blessing in the current era

Anonymous 24477

Leaving behind his NES is the only good thing my biological father ever did for me. I just had SMB and Duck Hunt but they were fun games and the only games I had until I was a teenager. Honestly though most of the games are too old for me, it's hard for me to get into them because the quality of life improvements like game saves, decent menus, etc. etc. aren't there. I played Castlevania 1 a few months ago and it was really fun though

I had all three mario bros games but my sister let her friend borrow mario bros 3 and then stopped being friends with her before we got it back. I was too young at the time to realize what we lost though thankfully

I am playing Mega Man II now, I used to suck at these games but something clicked I guess. This is actually pretty forgiving compared to something like Hollow Knight. If you die you start off right before the boss unless you get a game over and even then you just start over at the beginning of the level, although I haven't had to do that yet. None of the bosses have taken me more than a couple tries yet.

Also I just have Metal Man and Heat Man left

Anonymous 24868

Chrono trigger was snes but I adore that game and the music

Anonymous 24871

Lol, Metal Man's weapon is way overpowered, why'd you save him for last?

Anonymous 24873

Er wait I meant Quick Man and Heat Man. Metal Man was one of the first I did. I think my favorite weapon is the one I got from Air Man.

Yeah I still listen to that OST all the time. NES and SNES both have a special place in my heart but there are just so many great SNES soundtracks

Anonymous 25448

Not her, but I usually do odd orders whenever I replay Mega Man games.

How do I git gud at these games or make them easier? I suck so bad at them. I'm playing Contra and I love the gameplay but it's super hard.

The universal key to getting good at any game is to keep trying and to also recognize common things that are happening when you lose.

Beat Zelda 1 tonight. Had heard for ages that it was one of those "need a walkthrough" games, but I thought it's design was very intuitive and did a good job of keeping the player on track without telling them exactly what needs to be done.
No guide needed and it was fun.

Playing Adventures of Link next which I've heard it an absolutely miserable experience.

i tried kirby's adventure quite a bit ago and i was taken aback at how difficult it was

Anonymous 32155

>>32154
Lol I beat that game when I was 11

It's harder than the first one but the entire series is designed around the premise of friendly and inviting games. Just keep at it! If you've played a Kirby game before you can do it, also being end-of-life for NES the game is beautiful and worth playing.

I actually like adventures of link, it is different but not necessarily in a bad way. Some of the enemies can be really annoying until you get that downward stab move though

There were good elements of it and as you said things get way better once you get the downwards thrust. The implementation of the magic system was cool and I liked a lot of the spells like bounce and fairy which never make a return as far as I'm aware.
But overall I still think the game was more frustrating than fun, especially the final stretch of the game, dying in the final temple and needing to backtrack the entire way just feels demoralizing especially since Zelda 1 starts you right back at the entrance of the underground.

Oh well, beat ALttP and am in the middle of Awakening right now, it's fun to see the series evolve and what elements get carried between games. I don't think Adventures is as big of a black sheep as people are saying. While I was playing it I realized that the iteration of Link that inspired the Smash Bros moveset was him and the stage Temple draws from it, so, not forgotten by Nintendo at all. Don't regret playing it at all.

Totally agree, it is miserable to make that trek to the final temple if you game over. Awakening is great(I def prefer the OG over that weird clay remake) The gbc games are all awesome in my opinion. Idk which I think is better, seasons or awakening, but you'll likely enjoy them all if you've come this far

I actually just beat the GBC version of Awakening a few days ago and REALLY liked it. It's better than ALttP in my opinion and the game was very charming and sweet. ALttP didn't really have much side content to explore so I appreciated that Awakening had the trading sequence and seashells.

Replaying OOT was what got me started on my desire to play them all so the next chronological Zelda game I'm going to play will be Majora's Mask which I played as a kid but never beat. Though I think I'm going to take a short break to either play Donkey Kong Country or Mysterious Murasame Castle.

I honestly think it's the best 3D Zelda game of all time. Such an amazing game.
