Has anyone read it?
I constantly see people shilling it, is it worth it?
Anonymous 30093
i love it she’s just like me

>>30092I kind of hated it when I read it because I hated the protagonist, but then I read Ottessa Moshfegh's other books and realized that's just kind of how she writes. MYORR is far from her best work, if you like sort of raunchy fiction I'd recommend her book of short stories, Homesick for Another World.

It's nice. Someone in the depths of depression just refusing to live and hoping sleep will be a cure. Her friend (and their friendship) is more interesting.

it's good if you overlook the artless writing style

>>30092I enjoyed it, although I’ve also read Eileen and I liked that one more. I’m going to give Lapvona a go and see if I like it.

I read it and loved it, she's just like me in a way.

>>30092I hate reading but loved this book. It's not even a "she's just like me" thing (she's hot, so she's obviously not), it's just that it's a series of extended, colourful monologues that are insanely funny and entertaining. I never give a fuck about plot and only like character development or when books use a character as an excuse to longpost about culture (e.g. in gone girl), and this definitely does the latter.
also, Eileen's protagonist is much more relatable to your average nona if you are looking for a self insert.

Thought it was subpar. Wasted my time reading it. The fact she attacked other females passively is what did it for me

>>30676>>30092Seconding Eileen. If you want to read about a femcel who came from a shitty home and lives an insufferable mundane life, look no further. A page-turner, as well.

I wanted to like it but didnt. I guess I related to the main character but if I wanted to just see a person who resembles me in some way fester in their apartment for a year I’d look in the mirror
I wanted the main character to actually do something interesting or change. It reminded me of Sally Rooney’s books which I feel often have the same problem
Anonymous 31168
nice idea but pretty boring and the tacked on ending is dumb
Anonymous 31308
fell prey to booktok and got lapvona, how is it compared to MYORR?
Anonymous 31476
>>31308read lapvona, its meh.
lots of disgusting scenes and a meandering plot.
some bits are interesting and its not that long of a read but still not really worth it.
not her best.

depends what you like to read but i enjoyed, especially near the end and i find myself thinking about it often

Hole-Hiroko-Oyamad…
I read this thru a rec of MYORAR, it's about a women recently married moving out of the city close to her spouse's family and disappearing in the countryside. it was a great substrate for how a woman's life diminishes from marriage and being subsumed into a domestic role, but it really made no comment on it. i think some subtext flew over the male translator's head.

>>30092it's hysterical - I really enjoyed it. Eileen is probably more relatable to the average CC user though
Anonymous 34043
I loved it, read it in October when I was employed and currently experiencing it
Anonymous 34295
>>33649just finished this, thanks for recommending
Anonymous 34434
pretentious main character but good.

worst book i ever read. couldnt even finish it bc it was so bad. i had high expectations bc everyone was praising but it just sounds like its trying so hard to be deep and profound but fails miserably. plus i hate it when u read a book and can tell it was written a few years ago by the vocabulary and the way the writer forms sentences. it has absolutely no substance. to end it on a positive note the only thing i kind of liked is the portrayal of the failed american dream and how western societies became so individualistic to the point where they become kinda non-human and dystopian. i felt like there should be more focus on critiquing that, but it was just so dry. u learn nothing from the book. a waste of my time. theres so many good books to choose from and idk why so many people landed on this bs. no hate to anyone who liked it, i just personally found it dry
Anonymous 34453
>>34449>can tell it was written a few years ago by the vocabulary and the way the writer forms sentencesHaven't read it, but what do you mean by this? Unless period slang was used, how is it different than a book being written 10, 15 years ago? (instead of just a few)
Anonymous 34456
>>34449Out of curiosity, did you read it in French or English? I loved the book as a kid but I wonder if it translates badly to English. The plot would all be the same obviously, but the language would be totally different including the prose which is why you'd read the book in the first place. Though obviously my tween self might have had bad taste lol, might warrant a reread.
Anonymous 34458
>>34456She's talking about the book in the OP
Anonymous 34459
>>34453maybe its just that i read old ass books so im not used to it but when phones and social media are mentioned in books i cringe so hard… the writer mentions american pop culture a lot, so 100% of the time i have no clue what shes talking about bc im not american. so yeah thats what really threw me off
Anonymous 34460
>>34456oh im not shitting on the stranger it was about my year of rest and relaxation, camus is my favorite writer lol. i read the stranger in my native language and i think the translator did a good job getting the point across. nice to see another camus enjoyer tho >:)
Anonymous 34464
