You could make an outdoor aviary if you have the space! Or if you have a sunroom you don't use you could repurpose that.

Whether or not you can keep them at the same time depends on your cat. I babysat a cat that didn't act on their hunting instinct. Really didn't care about the bird at all.

I love birds but I'd never keep a bird, keeping a bird in a cage seems like the most inhuman thing to me

You're absolutely right if you keep them in there 24/7 and its a small cage for the species you're keeping.

That being said, provided you DO open the cage and have them be free to roam your home, it isn't any more inhumane than keeping a housecat. At least with tiny species like budgies, parrotlets, canaries imo.

I still think confining something big like a cockatoo isn't very nice but as long as they're well cared for, it's none of my business.
