Steven's an asshole for most of it but later they say it's because he's struggling with trauma, ok fair, trauma can make people (especially teens) lash out. But it gets bad when Steven starts getting violent and there's like 4 episodes where he tries to kill people (there's one episode where he actually does kill Jasper but they retcon it later and act like this was the right thing to do for her even though she's clearly badly impacted by it). The show peaked in Season 2 because after that they tried making the story 2Deep4U and it really went downhill, it was better when it was a simple story about Steven and his family going on magic quests
