I know it's dead now, but I wanted to talk about deviantART nostalgia.
Who did you follow?
Did you create and post on there?
Ever used the forums?
Memories and anecdotes?
I used to love the emoticons dA had. I wonder if there's a place I can download them all together.
I got my start as a photographer on dA, god, the memories…
First I started out making cringy emo/fantasy photo manipulations like pic related (not mine) pieced together from stock photo accounts with no regard for perspective or lighting, then eventually I got more into actual photography.
I used to follow all these young female photographers like larafairie (pic related). I taught myself photography and editing techniques by studying other people's photos and going through all the extremely shitty tutorials to find a few tricks that worked for what I wanted to achieve. For years my biggest wish was to get a Daily Deviation and I'd compare myself to the ones who made it all the time.
It was a fun place and pretty positive but really cringy. I learned a lot and made good connections and ended up working with a lot of people and getting decent photography experience and working my way up the ladder.
I LOVED DA.
Never forget snapesnogger & other crappy harry potter fanart
Oh no… why did you have to remind me…
He's so creepy with all these details up close
DA will be reborn now that tumblr is dead. Will grow from 2 active users to 3.
I loved the ridiculous overly specific stamps and I used to read fanfics on there before I found out fanfic.net was a thing lol!
omg, the stamps. I collected so many LOST ones…
yes, I created and posted one million shitty wallpapers I made with pre-made PS stamps and backgrounds
Oh god why.
TP is my favourite disney by far, why must you taint it for me like this.
No no no no no.
Oh god no.
I just checked out their front page for the first time in a long time and it's incredible how much the overall quality of art has gone down. It used to be mainly dreamy photography and fantasy artwork and such, pretty cheesy, but now it's all anatomy-illiterate anime, foot fetish, ponies, and the occasional big name artist from the olden days. Did everyone just move to their own Tumblr/FB pages? What really caused dA's downfall?
The 'premium' mode, perhaps? Also it's probably easier to get attention for art on sites like Twitter.
There is a premium mode now? I remember when they offered subscriptions/premium memberships
, but they didn't really improve experience that much - I got one gifted for a while and it didn't really improve exposure either. Just some added profile stuff.
I noticed that it was easier on Tumblr to get notes due to the snowball effect, but the feedback was also a lot less verbal. Mostly reblogs and likes for appreciation rather than thought-out comments, and with users posting everything on their blog no matter if personal or art related, it was harder to find profiles worth following because I really don't care about someone's fandoms if all I want to see is their work.
I never had a DA account (i didnt know how to make one lol) but I absolutely loved seeing those lick icons i thought they were super cute!
I also used to look at qinni's profile (RIP), and some other artists that i forgot the name of, they had a very angular illustrative style and it was so cute and pretty!
oh i posted so much hetalia on there back in the day. mildly embarrassing to think back on, but honestly nostalgic. i haven't been able to post art online again ever since the website sort of "fell off", social medias like twitter are so intimidating to start with.
What were your favorite pairings, anon? Like top 5
Not her but I loved almost everything between Russia, France, Germany, England and Sweden
oof i know how u feel I miss early DA posting :,( twitter (or any other social media) just seems very overwhelming and fast Also I used to look up germany fanart on DA soooo much
>>21435I wonder if you saw my Germany fanart
i had such horrifying taste back in the day man
i wouldnt be able to give you a top 5 since i liked almost anything involving pretty boys, but at some point i was REALLY into uscan which is embarrassing
after revisiting the show lately though, id probably go for either gerita or fruk
the nostalgia! i used to make my own lick emoticons too
Ahh, I miss DA. I had a fantasy/nature wallpaper account and it would make me so happy when people would comment and say something like "This is so pretty! It makes my work day more relaxing!"
There's a good chance I favorited your germany fanart, anon
aww thats super comfy, do you know where I can find some good fantasy wallpapers actually? I love collecting them!>>21441theres a very strong chance I probably did, I used to compulsively scour DA for fanart of him
Anything that isn't USUK is good so don't worry :^) actually I liked CanUs, I even wrote a revenge rape fanfic about them when I was like 15 and my Christian fujo friends IRL got offended because of the incest lmao>>21532
aww that's adorable
there's a non-zero chance that i read it.
dA lost it's place as the art gallery site when they let bean counters update their TOS and copyright policies. It's always something.
Right now what's the best site for uploading art in the West? Twitter, Tumblr and such sites are complete garbage for archiving art galleries.
Try instagram maybe. it's image based and people can't save your art
IG is an algorithmic nightmare, a lot of artists have abandoned it because you have to fight for your own followers to even see your posts on their feed. Also taking a screenshot instead of right click and save is not a hurdle for art thieves.
I think Twitter is the best right now to have your work seen and shared.
